Francesco Comesana may have first emerged on the main tour as a clay-court specialist, but he displayed signs of his potential on other surfaces during his breakthrough season in 2024. Over the past nine months in 2025, he has further reduced his reliance on clay, producing strong results across all surfaces. This all-around progress has fueled his steady rise in the rankings, leaving him on the verge of a top-50 debut.

The Argentine has posted an 8–8 record on hard courts in 2025, with all of his main-draw victories coming at high-profile events: twice at Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto (R2) and Cincinnati (R16), and once at the US Open (R2).

Over the past 20 months, Comesana has shown he is capable of adapting to different regions and playing conditions. The Asian swing presents a fresh opportunity for him to test himself further. He has never competed in this part of the world before, making this his debut at any level of professional tennis in the region.

Ugo Blanchet had his first taste of the Asian swing in 2024, but it did not go as planned, as he lost all three of his matches, including one in the qualifying rounds of the Shanghai Masters. This year, however, he has already shown improvement, defeating Rigele Te and Christopher Eubanks to secure his place in the main draw in Shanghai.

The Frenchman has achieved some important results on the main tour in recent months, and maintaining this momentum is key as he pushes toward a potential top-100 debut. He has been involved in a few tight matches in main draws at the French Open and Toronto Masters, and most recently at the US Open, he reached the third round as a qualifier by defeating Jakub Mensik, marking the best main-tour result of his career.

Head-to-head: 0-0. While there is a notable gap between the two in terms of tour-level experience and ranking, Ugo Blanchet is talented enough to challenge Francesco Comesana on hard courts. Comesana, however, has the edge when it comes to endurance and adapting to tough conditions in Shanghai, giving him a slight advantage, especially if the match extends to the later stages.
