The Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Jonathan Gannon following a 3-14 season, the team confirmed on Monday.

"Expectations were high for the Cardinals in 2025, but they were not met, and with that, the team has moved on from Jonathan Gannon as head coach," a statement on the team website reads.

Jonathan Gannon was hired by the Cardinals in 2023, two days after losing Super Bowl LVI as the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The hiring was met with a lot of commotion, with the Eagles furious to learn that Gannon had interviewed with the Cardinals in the week following the Eagles' NFC Championship Game win over the San Francisco 49ers, which falls within the period of impermissible conduct.

As a result of the Cardinals' tampering, the Eagles and Cardinals swapped third-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

In three seasons as Cardinals head coach, the team went 15-36. His final season in charge ended with a 3-14 record after losing 14 of the final 15 games.

The Cardinals ended the season with more losses than the rest of the NFC West combined, with the Seahawks, Rams and 49ers combining for 13 losses.

Gannon benched QB Kyler Murray, the Cardinals' first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, in December after the former Oklahoma signal caller suffered a foot injury in Week 5 that didn't properly heal.

With Jacoby Brissett as QB1, the Cardinals won one game and lost 11 as they finished bottom of the NFC West.

Black Monday

Gannon is the third NFL head coach to be fired on 'Black Monday', the first day after the final regular season games on which several head coaches get fired each year.

Earlier, the Cleveland Browns fired Kevin Stefanski after six seasons, and the Las Vegas Raiders fired Pete Carroll after one season in charge of the team.

The Arizona Cardinals have the third pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
