Minnesota originally signed Jones to the practice squad on November 27th after being released from the New York Giants. He will join Nick Mullens as a backup for starting quarterback Sam Darnold.
"I've always been a fan," said O'Connell after the team signed Jones.
"Really liked the person, the human being, the makeup, and then the player, Daniel Jones. I think there's so much out in front of him that are going to be really good things that we get to personally be a part of, and I can't wait to work with him."
Other teams had a chance to claim Jones off of practice squad waivers the past three weeks only under the condition that they have a starting quarterback who is injured. Luckily, for the Vikings, that never occurred.
Jones is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season ends.
The former New York Giants (2-8) quarterback upgraded to one of the best squads in the NFC after it was reported he was looking to join a Super Bowl contender.
Jones has 2,070 passing yards on the season with eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, a rough 79.4 passer rating, and an even uglier 46.3 quarterback rating.
