Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman and New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz were given the 2025 MLB "Reliever of the Year' awards on Thursday.

Aroldis Chapman - American League

This is Chapman's second time winning the award after he put monstrous numbers in his 16th season.

He also earned his first career All-MLB First-Team selection alongside teammate Garrett Crochet

Chapman finished 2025 with 32 saves and a 1.17 earned run average with 85 strikeouts and a stellar 0.75 WHIP through 61.1 innings

His 32 saves are the most Chapman's put up in a season since his 2019 campaign with the New York Yankees when he finished with 37.

At one point during the 2025 season, Chapman faced 50 batters without allowing a single hit. The streak lasted from July 23rd to September 10th in 14.2 innings, at one point being considered for the AL Cy Young Award.

Chapman is now 33 saves short of 400 and 69 strikeouts away from 1,400 - 33 more to set the all-time record by a relief pitcher.

The 37-year-old has one year left with the Red Sox, with a 2027 vesting option (an option that's guaranteed only if the player meets certain requirements.)

Edwin Diaz - National League

Also like Chapman, Diaz won his second Reliever of the Year award (National League).

He also earned All-MLB Second-Team honours this season and his third All-Star selection.

He finished the 2025 season with 28 saves and a 1.63 ERA with 98 strikeouts and 0.87 WHIP through 66.1 innings.

His 20 saves this season marked the seventh time in his nine-year career where Diaz put up at least 20 saves in a single season - his career high still remains 57 (2018).

Diaz opted out of his remaining contract year with the Mets, which would've paid him just over $15.4 million for the 2026 season.

The 31-year-old is now a free agent and can sign with any team this offseason.
