Denmark got off to a flying start on the first day of the Badminton European Championships when they secured a comfortable 5-0 win against Spain.

Anders Antonsen gave Denmark a 1-0 lead but faced stiff resistance from Alvaro Leal, who stayed level with Antonsen until 12-12 in the first set before the Dane pulled away to win 21-15. A similar scenario unfolded in the second set, with the match staying tight until 12-12 before Antonsen once again took control, winning 21-16.

The second match, women’s singles, followed the same pattern as Clara Azurmendi fought bravely trying to keep up with Line Kjærsfeldt in both sets but the power of Kjærsfeldt was simply too much to handle for the Spaniard and Kjærsfeldt ultimately emerged victorious with a 21-18, 21-18 win.

The Spanish doubles were also left helpless against the strong Danish opposition both on the Men's and Women's side as the Danish pairs proved far too strong for their Spanish opponents.

In addition to Spain, Denmark has been drawn in a group with England and the host nation Azerbaijan. The next match is against England on Thursday. The top two teams advance to the knockout stage.

The Danish team has travelled to Baku without the biggest star Viktor Axelsen, just as Mia Blichfeldt has stayed at home. The doubles profile Anders Skaarup also recently had to withdraw with an arm injury.
