Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal (28) struck out 13 batters in his first-ever complete game shutout on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians.

He became the first pitcher in Tigers history to throw a complete game shutout while allowing zero walks, no more than two hits, and 13 strikeouts on just 94 pitches (72 strikes, 26 swings and misses).

Skubal finished the game with a strikeout that clocked in at 102.6 miles per hour (mph), his fastest pitch of not only the day but his entire career.

For those still new to baseball, Skubal achieved what is called a "Maddux", coined after the Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux, where a pitcher throws a complete game shutout on fewer than 100 pitches.

Skubal's 13 strikeouts on Sunday are the most in a 'Maddux' since the MLB began tracking pitches in 1988.

Last season, Skubal won the American League Cy Young Award (best pitcher) by unanimous decision last season and it looks like he's on pace to reclaim the title.

Skubal is now 5-2 on the season with a 2.49 earned run average (ERA). Through 68.2 innings, he has given up 51 hits, walking just seven batters while striking out 92 batters - currently second in the league behind Washington Nationals starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore's 93.

The Tigers' ace was the first pitcher last season to reach 200 strikeouts, finishing with 228.

But Skubal has some tough competition this year if he wants to win back-to-back Cy Youngs as starting pitchers Max Fried (league-leader in ERA with a 1.29), Royals' Kris Bubic (1.45 ERA), and Texas Rangers starters Nathan Eovoldi (1.60 ERA) and Tyler Mahle (1.80 ERA), among many others, are just as qualified for the award almost two full months into the season.
