MLB All-Star right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes announced that he will compete for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic on Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates man only made his debut in the big leagues a year ago, but has soon become one of the elite talents in MLB, making 32 starts with an earned run average (ERA) of just 2.16, whilst striking out 223 batters.

Skenes, 22, will join up with Aaron Judge in the Classic next spring in what is already shaping up to be a potent lineup for the US.

Speaking about his decision to participate in the tournament, Skenes, who has a military background with the Air Force Academy, explained on MLB Network: "I've had the chance to wear USA across my chest a couple of times and wear it in a couple of different fashions, and this is one thing as a fan of baseball, watching the previous World Baseball Classic, that if I ever get a chance to do this I am not saying no.

"...Wearing USA is unlike anything else and to do it on this stage, there's no bigger stage to do it."

USA coach Mark DeRosa has stated that he wants to create a 'dream team' for next year's Classic

Team USA were losing finalists in the last edition of the competition, defeated by Shohei Ohtani inspired Japan.

Next year, they will start in Pool B, in Houston, from March 6th.
