Luke Littler’s remarkable rise on the European circuit showed no signs of slowing down as he brushed aside Raymond van Barneveld 6-1 to reach the last 16 of the European Championship in Dortmund.

The 18-year-old produced a professional performance against the 58-year-old Dutchman, a five-time world champion, to underline his growing dominance. Littler now stands on the verge of becoming the world No. 1, with a chance to overtake Luke Humphries at the top of the rankings before the weekend is out.

His next opponent will be the seasoned left-hander James Wade, whose experience makes him a formidable presence on the tour. Should both Littler and Humphries progress, the pair are on course for a tantalising quarter-final clash that could decide who leads English darts into its new era.

While British players continue to command attention, home supporters in Dortmund were given plenty to celebrate. Ricardo Pietreczko joined Martin Schindler in the last 16, marking the first time two German players have reached this stage of the European Championship.

Pietreczko, 31, held his nerve in a 6-4 victory over Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock, sealing the win with his fifth match dart after a decisive break at 2-2. Schindler, ranked world No. 17, had edged past England’s Dave Chisnall the previous day.

There was disappointment for one German, though, as Niko Springer was beaten 6-3 by the Netherlands’ Jermaine Wattimena on his European Championship debut. Springer fought back from three legs down to trail 4-3, but missed key chances to draw level and paid the price.

England’s defending champion, Ritchie Edhouse, failed to qualify this year, ensuring a new name will be added to the trophy on Sunday night. The tournament carries a total prize fund of £600,000, with £120,000 for the winner -- and for Littler, possibly the No. 1 ranking to go with it.
