Odense Handball reached the Champions League final for the first time in their club history this season. But if things should have gone according to rules, they shouldn't even have been in the competition. However, the mistake was never discovered by neither the Danish Handball Federation nor the European Handball Federation.

The Danish Handball Federation admit to having made a mistake when last year they gave Odense the opportunity to get a ticket for the Champions League.

"Unfortunately, we made a mistake last year. It was not Odense, but Ikast, that should have had the opportunity to request an upgrade, because Ikast came second in the regular season. But the European Handball Federation also did not notice the mistake", says Frank Smith to TV 2 Sport.

Ikast Handball's director, Daniel Gronhoj, is shocked by the news.

"I recognize that mistakes can happen, but mistakes with such big sporting and financial consequences must not happen", says Daniel Gronhoj, who calls it a scandal and will now discuss the situation with his board.

The focus on the rules for qualifying for the European tournaments has come to light after Skjern Handball secured access to the final of the Danish championship in the men's top league on Saturday.

Skjern were convinced that it gave the club the opportunity to apply for a place in the Champions League, but the Danish Handball Federation turned it down.

However, those rules were not followed to the letter when Odense last year took the opportunity to apply for a ticket to the Champions League.

Odense lost the final to Györ who won the trophy for the seventh time in tournament history.
