Sweden have fallen well short of their aim to win a medal at the 2025 IHF Women's Handball World Championship, as a victory over South Korea was not enough to stop them exiting the competition at the Main Round stage.

Following losses to Brazil and Norway in their previous two matches in Germany, Sweden knew they would be eliminated if those same two opponents claimed wins today against Angola and Czech Republic, respectively, not matter how Blagult fared against South Korea.

The Brazilians saw off Angola 32-26 in Group IV's early match to take one of the two Quarter-final spots on offer, before Tomas Axner's side made sure they did all they could against the Koreans.

Sweden never trailed in the match they had to win, going on a series of 3-0 and 4-0 runs in the first half to open a commanding 20-11 half-time lead.

World and Olympic champions in the 1980s and 1990s, South Korea's side of today is no match for their previous generations', but they showed they can still cut it in the second half, coming from 13 goals down at one stage to close the gap to five.

Korea bettered the Swedes by four goals in the second period, and it would have been more if not for crucial saves from Filippa IdehnBut a win, no matter the margin, was all Sweden needed, and they ran out 32-27 victors to keep themselves in the competition for the time being.

Nathalie Hagman and Boeun Gim both scored seven times from 10 shots apiece for their respective sides, to finish the match as joint-top scorers.

However, later this evening, Norway took an expected victory over the Czechs to progress alongside Brazil and eliminate Sweden. The Norwegians were unstoppable once again, recording a crushing 37-14 success.

That leaves Sweden - fourth at the last two Olympics and the 2023 World Championship - four points off the top two, with only two left to play for ahead of their final Main Round match against Angola on Sunday, meaning they will finish outside the top eight at a Worlds for the first time in a decade.
