Buffalo Sabres 3-6 Toronto Maple Leafs
The Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs had an interesting game in New York, with the visitors coming out on top 6-3.
It took Bobby McMann all of 89 seconds to put the Leafs in front very early on. The Sabres thought they levelled the score a minute later, only for the goal to be disallowed on further review.
Things got worse for the hosts when Auston Matthews doubled their deficit. The goal was his 11th of the year.
It would stay that way until 1:53 in the second when the Leafs scored a third with Nick Robinson getting in on the fun. John-Jason Peterka got Buffalo's first goal of the game 34 seconds later to bring his team back into it, but two minutes later, Max Domi put Toronto back up by two.
Max Pacioretty made it 5-1 midway through the second, leaving the Sabres with a mountain to climb. Mattias Samuelsson got one back for the hosts with 4:04 left in the period before Owen Power added another to put the Sabres two goals behind with 8:04 left to play.
But, that was the best they could do, as William Nylander added an empty net goal at the end to complete the scoring.
Toronto are now on a three-game winning streak, sitting in third spot in the Eastern Conference. They play again tomorrow at home to the New York Islanders. As for the Sabres, who have now lost their last 12, they sit in last place in the Conference.
Detroit Red Wings 3-4 Montreal Canadiens
Two struggling teams met in Detroit as the Montreal Canadiens edged the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 away.
It took some time for the first goal to come about, but 7:09 into the first period, Emil Heineman put the Habs in front. However, the Red Wings responded six minutes later through Patrick Kane.
Jake Evans' shorthanded goal late on in the first put the guests back up, only for them to be pegged back a minute later by Joe Veleno.
After a scoreless second period, the game continued its drama from the first period in the final stanza. Tyler Motte gave Detroit the lead 100 seconds into the final frame and Arber Xhekaj equalised for the Habs before Patrik Laine found the go-ahead goal to put Montreal up once again, and this time, for good. The Red Wings could not find another leveller, ultimately falling 4-3.
With the win, the Habs go one point behind their opponents in the standings, although they both have much to do if they are to make the playoffs.
