Just two matches were on the docket on Monday night in the National Hockey League (NHL), as the home teams came away victorious on both occasions.

It turned out to be a momentous occasion for Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who scored his 1,700th point with the team in a 6-3 defeat of the visiting St. Louis Blues.

The hosts ran off to a very quick 2-0 lead less than a minute in through Bryan Rust and Anthony Mantha before the Blues responded later in the frame. Nick Bjugstad got one back 4:15 in before Jordan Kyrou tied things up before the intermission.

Parker Withersppon put the Penguins back in front six and a half minutes into the second, before Rust doubled his tally for the night to give his side another two-goal cushion. Crosby assisted on the latter's marker, which got him to the 1,700 point mark.

Although Mathieu Joseph did get one back for St. Louis, it proved not to be enough. The Penguins captain got a goal for himself before Evgeni Malkin added an empty netter to complete the scoring.

Only the Utah Mammoth and New Jersey Devils - both with eight victories - have more wins than Pittsburgh's seven so far.

In the Canadian capital, the Ottawa Senators scored quite often as they ran away with a convincing 7-2 success against the Boston Bruins.

It was Morgan Geekie who gave the guests the lead just three minutes in to silence the crowd at the Canadian Tire Centre. After that, it was all Ottawa, who rambled seven goals. First, Drake Batherson converted on a power play situation to tie things up.

Batherson and Claude Giroux were then among the goals in the second period, before Tim Stutzle added a double in the third as part of a four-goal haul from the Sens to cruise to victory.

Viktor Arvidsson netted a mere consolation for the Bruins with 10 seconds left, but the Senators held on for a third successive win.
