The first Saturday of 2026 saw quite a bit of action in the National Hockey League (NHL), as 13 games occurred throughout the day. Here is a look back at a couple of the results.

San Jose Sharks 3-7 Tampa Bay Lightning

It was a dominant showing from the Tampa Bay Lightning, who scored seven times in their 7-3 victory away to the San Jose Sharks

Much of the Bolts' damage was done in the opening 6:46 of the game, where they scored thrice. The Sharks went for a change in goaltenders after the third goal in attempts to reverse their fortune.

While they did get on the board midway through the first frame, Tampa picked up from where they left off following the intermission.

Darren Raddysh had quite the performance from the visitors, scoring a hat-trick, while Nikita Kucherov had a goal of his own plus four assists.

Although the damage was already done, the one standout player on the night for San Jose was Pavol Regenda, who got all three of his teams' goals.

The Lightning move to the top of the Eastern Conference with the victory, coupled with other results elsewhere. The Sharks fell out of the playoff places in the West.

New York Islanders 4-3 Toronto Maple Leafs (OT)

At the UBS Arena, the New York Islanders bounced back from their New Year's Eve reverse with a 4-3 overtime success over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Adam Pelech put the hosts in front just 70 seconds after the restart. Toronto turned things around though, as Auston Matthews netted both of their goals in the second period. His second, which put the Buds in front, gave him the franchise record for most goals with 421. He passed Mats Sundin in the process.

Matthew Schaefer levelled the score for the Islanders with 8:50 left in regulation, before the Leafs restored their lead a minute later through Nick Robertson

Still, the home team would not give up, with Emil Heineman tying things up less than three minutes left in regulation time. New York went on to grab their winner through Schaefer, who finished his chance in the final minute of overtime to earn his side the win.

The Islanders go up to fifth spot in what is a tightly-contested Eastern Conference, with the Leafs five points and eight places behind them.
