For the first time in his career, Washington coach Spencer Carbery has won the Jack Adams Award for the best coach of the past NHL season, ahead of Winnipeg's Scott Arniel and Montreal's Martin St. Louis. He is the first coach in history to earn Coach of the Year honours in the ECHL, AHL and NHL.

Carbery led Washington for a second season and, with the Capitals, was the best in the Eastern Conference and second in the regular season behind Winnipeg. He totalled 51 wins, 11 more than the previous season.

The 33-year-old coach's team was also under the microscope this season due to captain Alexander Ovechkin, who was attacking Wayne Gretzky's historic scoring record, which he broke on April 6th.

Carbery dominated the Coach of the Year voting by a wide margin. He scored 464 points as 81 of 103 voters placed him first. Second-place Arniel received 249 points, and St. Louis had 66 points.
