August Holmgren's Wimbledon adventure continued on Thursday, when he won a thrilling marathon match in the second round against the 21st-seeded Czech, Tomas Machac.
Holmgren survived three match points en route to victory, and after more than 4 hours and 30 minutes of tennis, the 27-year-old Dane, who, thanks to an excellent serve and razor-sharp forehand, advanced with a scoreline of 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6.
In the decisive match tiebreak in the fifth set, there was no doubt about the outcome. Holmgren converted his first match point and was subsequently cheered in front of a packed Court 12 at Wimbledon.
Holmgren played with great courage and belief throughout the match. The Dane produced 35 aces during the match and hit an extensive number of forenhand winner against the resilient Czech contender.
Judging from his excellent performance, it was hard to believe that Holmgren, ranked 192nd in the world, is playing his first Grand Slam tournament.
In the first round, Holmgren overcame Frenchman Quentin Halys and will face world No 11, Alex de Minaur in the third round.
