Mallorca saw their winless run in LaLiga this term stretch to five matches despite coming from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid, who themselves have won just once in the league this season.

In the Mallorcan sunshine and despite their midweek UEFA Champions League exertions, it was Atletico that took the initiative from the first whistle.

Giacomo Raspadori almost caught out Leo Roman in the Pirates goal with an attempt direct from a corner, and Pablo Barrios’ fierce drive also cannoned back off the upright.

Inside the opening quarter-hour, Antonio Raillo’s handball as a result of Atleti’s consistent early pressure gave Julian Alvarez the chance to hand Los Rojiblancos the lead, but Roman’s brilliant full-length save to his left kept the game goalless.

Mallorca eventually found their feet, yet Johan Mojica’s surging run and cross to Takuma Asano, and a Martin Valjent long-range effort saved easily by Jan Oblak was as good as it got for the hosts before the break.

Clear-cut chances came at a premium, with the hosts even losing Marash Kumbulla to injury before the HT whistle as Diego Simeone’s men kept applying pressure.

With the same pattern of play continuing after the break, Marcos Llorente’s early cross caused panic in the home defence, though Mallorca appeared a little more purposeful themselves.

A phenomenal Roman save kept out Giuliano Simeone’s drive as Atleti pressed, and with an hour on the clock, the status quo in the game remained.

A triple substitution from Simeone came as a result, with forwards Alexander Sorloth and Antoine Griezmann introduced in an effort to swing the game the visitors’ way.

Sørloth’s time on the pitch spanned just 10 minutes, as he was sent off after a VAR review for a nasty challenge, inspiring hope in the home crowd that they could snatch a victory.

Late Mallorcan attacks failed to trouble Oblak, and Conor Gallagher looked to have landed the knockout blow with a fine strike after Roman had saved well from the impressive Llorente.

That spurred Mallorca into action and with five minutes to play, a super cross from Jan Virgili was powered home by an unmarked Vedat Muriqi to rescue a share of the spoils.

Despite the late equaliser, Mallorca have still recorded their lowest points total at this stage of a league season since 2000/01, and their run of games without a win - stretching back into last season - now stands at eight.
