All 32 teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) took to the ice on Tuesday in what was a full night of play.

Several games required overtime and even a shootout on a packed night. In the battle of Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia Flyers edged rivals Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout. Justin Brazeau gave the guests the lead midway through the opening frame, before Bobby Brink tied things up on a power play towards the end of the period.

Travis Konecny fully turned things around for the Flyers less than three minutes after the restart as the Flyers held the lead for the remainder of the period. They could not keep out Pittsburgh in the third though, as captain Sidney Crosby restored parity with his eighth goal on the year.

A shootout was ultimately required after overtime solved nothing. After both teams missed their opening attempts, Matvey Michkov and Brink converted theirs for Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Evgeni Malkin was the only Penguin to score across the three rounds, as Villa Koivunen has his effort denied to give the Flyers the win.

It also went the distance in Florida between the Panthers and Anaheim Ducks. In what was an incredible game - where the hosts erased a two-goal deficit in the third period - the Ducks prevailed 2-1 in the shootout to beat the defending champions 3-2. Mason McTavish scored the winning penalty shot for his team.

Elsewhere, the Toronto Maple Leafs recovered from an early deficit to top the Calgary Flames 4-3. Matthew Knies and Max Domi both scored twice for the Buds to give them conscutive wins.

There was just one goal at the American Airlines Center, with the host team Dallas Stars topping the Washington Capitals 1-0. Tyler Seguin's power play marker 43 seconds into the second made the difference, as the Caps failed to score on any of their 42 shots.

Blackhawks continue fine start

A dramatic contest ended in the Chicago Blackhawks' favour in a 7-3 defeat of the visiting Ottawa Senators. The hosts opened proceedings with a three-goal haul in the first period.

After Connor Bedard netted his second of the night, the Sens sparked to life. In the space of four and a half minutes, to go from being 4-0 down to just a goal behind.

Unfortuantely for them, they could not get any closer, as Bedard completed his hat-trick 3:45 into the final frame. That was his first career hatty for the hosts.

Ryan Donato and Frank Nazar completed the scoring later on to seal the victory for Chicago, who continue to show improvement on last year's showing.

The Tampa Bay Lightning held off the Nashville Predators with a 5-2 success on the road. Zemgus Girgensons found the back of the net twice for the Bolts to see them over the line.

In what was a wild second period, where both the Colorado Avalanche and New Jersey Devils scored four times each, the former also managed two goals in each of the first and third periods to prevail 8-4. The Avs went up 5-0 with 11:21 left in the second, before Devils just needed four minutes to reduce the deficit to one.

Nathan MacKinnon then deflated the Devils with a power play goal to put Colorado up 6-4. A Victor Olofsson hat-trick, the first in his career, allowed for them to pull away, completing the win.

Kyle Connor played the hero for the Winnipeg Jets in a 4-3 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild. Meanwhile, the Boston Bruins stormed from two goals down to top the New York Islanders 5-2. It was the same score for the Detroit Red Wings over the St Louis Blues, where Dylan Larkin stole the show with a pair of goals plus an assist.

Miles Wood played a key role in helping the Columbus Blue Jackets to down the Buffalo Sabres 4-3, as the fourth line winger tied things up in the third before adding the winner in overtime.

There was no joking around in the third period by the Vegas Golden Knights. Down 3-2 against the Carolina Hurricanes, the visitors rallied with four unanswered goals to come out on top 6-3. Jack Eichel scored what proved to be the winner before adding another shortly thereafter.

It was also a 6-3 scoreline for the Edmonton Oilers, who beat the Utah Mammoth at home. Down 2-0 after the first, the Oilers came alive in the second frame, netting five times as the NHL's newest team could not keep up with their opponents. Conor McDavid added an empty net goal - his second of the match - to complete the scoring.

The Vancouver Canucks face the New York Rangers, the Seattle Kraken battle the Montreal Canadiens, and the San Jose Kings take on the Los Angeles Kings in the latest matches on the west cost.
