Paris Saint-Germain’s six-game winning run in all competitions came to an end as they were beaten 2-1 by Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc des Princes, a result which breathes life back into the Ligue 1 title race.

PSG came into this clash on the back of their progression to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-finals, having not played in Ligue 1 last week in preparation for their midweek clash with Liverpool.

As such, they may have been feeling a bit rusty as they returned to domestic duties, as they found themselves two goals down inside 20 minutes.

In fact, less than 10 minutes were on the clock when Endrick netted his fourth league goal since joining on loan from Real Madrid in January, smashing in off the post from inside the area.

Abner Vinícius was then denied when Matvéi Safonov pushed his acrobatic overhead kick over the bar, but that was only a temporary reprieve for the hosts before they dropped further behind.

Lyon broke quickly from a PSG corner through Afonso Moreira, who kept his cool to slot into the bottom corner.

The hosts had to respond and, after Gonçalo Ramos directed a weak header into the hands of Dominik Greif, Les Parisiens had a fantastic chance to pull one back when Ainsley Maitland-Niles was adjudged to have pushed Lucas Hernández over in the area.

However, from the resulting spot-kick, Ramos could not beat Greif in a huge let-off for Les Gones. On the brink of half time, Lucas Beraldo headed over the bar as PSG went back to the dressing room with a mountain to climb.

After the restart, Lyon continued to threaten, with Moreira and Endrick forcing important saves from Safonov.

In an attempt to give his side extra impetus, Luis Enrique brought on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and, while the Georgia international did test Greif and then headed wide shortly after his introduction, the change did not have the desired impact.

Ousmane Dembélé was another second-half substitute, and he went closer than any of his teammates after the interval when he curled against the crossbar with Greif rooted to the spot.

Kvaratskhelia pulled a goal back with a fantastic strike from the edge of the area that went in off the post, but ultimately, Enrique’s decision to rest a number of his star players backfired as his team were unable to recover from Lyon’s early blitz.

The result means the reigning champions are just one point above RC Lens in the table and, while they do have a game in hand still to come, their rearranged fixture with their closest challengers could prove to be vital in deciding where the title goes.

Meanwhile, after a six-game winless run threatened to end their UCL qualification hopes, back-to-back victories have moved Lyon back up to third and with their fate back in their own hands.
