RB Leipzig maintained their hold over SC Freiburg by securing a 2-0 win, which not only solidified their position in the top four but also stretched their unbeaten H2H record to a whopping 14 matches.

Considering both Leipzig and Freiburg are chasing the European spots, the opening stages were hardly akin to what would be expected of two top-six challengers.

It took until the 20th minute for either side to have a clear sight of goal, and even when they did, Maximilian Eggestein’s headed effort was easily gathered by Peter Gulacsi.

It was Leipzig doing most of the legwork in the final third, but they were struggling to create any meaningful opportunities to take the lead, and certainly didn’t look like a side that had the weekend off prior to this game.

Their best opportunity of the first half came from a quick throw-in five minutes before the break, opening up space for Christoph Baumgartner inside the area, only for him to skew a volley well wide of the target, which just about summed up the first period as a whole.

The game sparked into life within 10 minutes of the restart, when David Raum’s teasing delivery to the far post proved inviting for Willi Orban to climb highest and head home his first goal of the season.

Leipzig weren’t happy to rest on their laurels, and whatever Ole Werner said at half-time was working a treat, as they soon doubled their advantage. It was another set piece that proved Freiburg’s undoing, and this time, it was Baumgartner who won the first contact, with his initial effort well saved by Noah Atubolu before Romulo Cardoso headed home the rebound.

Freiburg’s response was muted to say the least, and certainly not one of a side that had earned more points from losing positions than any other team in the Bundesliga going into this matchday.

Antonio Nusa’s deflected effort came within a whisker of humbling Freiburg even further, but that miss didn’t matter to Leipzig, who simply toyed with their visitors in the closing stages and were completely untroubled in seeing out a ninth win from their last 10 competitive home games.
