The Black Satellites secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Central African Republic on Thursday, at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt, finishing top of Group C and booking their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match remained goalless for much of the game as CAR struggled to create clear chances against a well-organised and disciplined Ghanaian defence.

Ghana controlled possession and probed through key players like Aziz Issah and Andrews Adjabeng, but resilient defending and some wayward finishing kept the scoreline level until the 84th minute.

The breakthrough came on a swift counter-attack when Joseph Aidoo’s long pass found substitute Joseph Opoku, who the box beat three defenders to calmly slot the ball past the CAR goalkeeper.

The well-taken late goal sparked celebrations on the Ghana bench sending the Black Satellites on course to top the group.

CAR, needing a win to progress, were unable to mount a comeback in the closing minutes as Ghana expertly managed the game to secure their second win of the tournament.

Ghana entered the match knowing a draw would suffice, having previously beaten Senegal 1-0 and drawn 1-1 with DR Congo. The victory means Ghana finish the group unbeaten with seven points, while Senegal’s 2-0 win over DR Congo ensured both teams advance to the knockout stage.

Speaking after the match, Ghana U20 coach Desmond Ofei praised his team’s patience and tactical discipline.

"This result was the reward for our patience and tactical discipline. The boys showed maturity today, and now we look forward to the knockout stage with confidence."

For CAR, the defeat ended their campaign with just one point from three matches, a disappointing outcome compared to their quarter-final run in 2021.

The Black Satellites’ unbeaten group stage run is their first since 2013, as they bid to lift a record-extending fifth U20 AFCON title. Their next challenge will be in the quarter-finals, where they will face one of the third-placed teams from Groups A or B.

The full line-up for the knockout stages will be confirmed after the final group matches conclude on Friday.
