On Saturday afternoon, FC Bayern failed to win the German championship on their own - now the Munich team can cheer from the sofa. Because Bayer Leverkusen couldn't get past SC Freiburg with a 2-2 draw, the record champions now have an eight-point lead with two matchdays to go: unassailable.

Munich celebrates start-to-finish victory

After a title-less season, Bayern Munich were red-hot right from the start of the 2024/2025 season. They started the season with four wins, including a 6-1 victory over newly promoted Holstein Kiel and a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen. From matchday three onwards, they were top of the table - a position they would not relinquish until the end of the season.

A first stumble followed in the autumn; they drew with the reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen (1-1) and had a spectacular draw against Eintracht Frankfurt (3-3).

Minor setbacks, but new coach Vincent Kompany was not deterred by them. The following five games were all won without conceding a goal. The first of just two defeats came on matchday 14, when they were beaten 2-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05. The second followed almost three months later, when they lost 3-2 to Vfl Bochum.

Former defender Kompany brought defensive stability back to Munich. Two matchdays before the end of the season, they have only conceded 32 goals and are on course to have their best defensive season in five years (2019/2020, also 32). An achievement that is remarkable considering the numerous injuries this season.

Injury concerns and new signings

Defensive lynchpin Dayot Upamecano missed individual games over the course of the season with hip and pelvic problems and has also been out since mid-March with cartilage damage. New signing Hiroki Ito broke his metatarsal in the summer, played six games this season and then suffered the same injury again. Eric Dier, who is likely to move to AS Monaco in the summer, became a reliable figure and always stepped in when his teammates were unable to do so.

Things didn't look much better on the flanks, however. Alphonso Davies suffered several torn muscle fibres before his season ended in mid-March with a torn cruciate ligament. Returning loanee Josip Stanisic missed the entire first half of the season with a torn collateral ligament, while Sacha Boey missed a total of eleven games with a torn meniscus and ankle injury.

Kompany was forced to change his plans time and time again and had to plan with midfielders Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich at right-back. In addition, Manuel Neuer was absent for weeks with a broken rib and later a torn muscle fibre - Sven Ulreich, Daniel Peretz and new signing Jonas Urbig deputised for the world champion.

In defensive midfield, Leon Goretzka, who had actually looked on his way out, got his chance to return to centre stage. This was mainly because talented Aleksandar Pavlovic was out with a broken collarbone and glandular fever. Summer transfer Joao Palhinha suffered a torn muscle bundle and rarely played.

The offence was largely spared. They had to cope with a number of short absences, but apart from Jamal Musiala's torn muscle, which ended his season at the beginning of April, the players returned quickly.

The transfer of Michael Olise

The only player to have featured in every league game this season is Michael Olise. The French winger joined from Crystal Palace for 53 million euros in the summer. It quickly became clear that he is worth every single penny. Olise has recorded 10 goals and 15 assists in the league alone. With an average Flashscore rating of 7.8, he towers above all his teammates and is second in the league only to Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush (8.1), who left in the winter.

Since detailed data collection began in 2004/2005, no Bayern player other than Olise has scored at least ten goals and provided ten assists in his first Bundesliga season. No player has scored more Bundesliga goals in 2025 than the Frenchman (13). Olise scored the equaliser in the 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig after setting up Bayern's first goal.

Alongside Harry Kane, who scored 24 goals and set up a further eight in 29 games, the Frenchman formed the centrepiece of Bayern's attack. Musiala contributed 12 goals and two assists in 25 games - Leroy Sané, 11 goals and four assists in 28 games.
