We're down to the last 16 teams of this season's Champions League, and their battles to reach the quarter-finals are beginning this week, with eight tantalising first legs taking place across seven different countries.

Tuesday's top stories:

- Galatasaray take a lead into the second leg at Anfield, after beating Liverpool 1-0 in a chaotic clash, where Mario Lemina's first-half header was the difference.

Atalanta were thrashed by Bayern Munich in Bergamo, with the German giants knocking in half a dozen goals as Michael Olise netted a brace.

- Over in Madrid, Atletico took advantage of a catastrophic first half from Tottenham to win the first leg 5-2. Antonin Kinsky made two mistakes that led to goals before being brutally subbed off in the 16th minute.

- Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona at St. James Park after Lamine Yamal netted a last-gasp penalty following Harvey Barnes' 86th-minute goal, ahead of the second leg at Camp Nou next week

Tuesday's schedule:

Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool

Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid 5-2 Tottenham

Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona

Key updates and insights:

23:00 CET - A clash of heads between Joao Palhinha and Cristian Romero sums up Spurs' night. It's a nasty incident with both players coming off badly.

That's the final action of a frenetic game. Atletico Madrid win 5-2 and it was in the first half where the game, and most probably the tie, was won. Mistakes led to three of the hosts' goals, and now it will be on Igor Tudor to answer the questions as to why Tottenham imploded in the opening 45 minutes.

Two consolation goals give them a sniff ahead of next Wednesday's second leg, but will Tudor be in charge for it?

22:54 CET - All over at St James' Park, where Lamine Yamal has saved his side with a late penalty to earn them a 1-1 draw and take it back to Camp Nou all square.

22:44 CET - Newcastle lead Barcelona! With the goals flying in across our other games, it's been tense at St James' Park, but the deadlock has been broken in the 86th minute by Harvey Barnes. How big will that goal prove to be in the tie?

22:38 CET - No goalkeeper is safe! Jan Oblak does his best Antonin Kinsky impression by giving the ball away to Pedro Porro inside his own half, and substitute Dominic Solanke applies a rasping finish to make it 5-2 in Madrid.

22:25 CET - Atalanta fans are also getting that sinking feeling tonight, with Bayern now 6-0 up in Bergamo. Michael Olise is hunting a hat-trick with 22 minutes to go in the 'contest' as Jamal Musiala gets in on the fun too.

22:16 CET - If there are any Spurs supporters left at the Metropolitano, they've left now as Julian Alvarez goes from box-to-box on the break to slot home his second of the night and Atletico Madrid's fifth. A simple goal on the counter, Tottenham have been cut open again.

22:11 CET - Is it tie over in Bergamo too? Bayern Munich now lead Atalanta 4-0 after 55 minutes, with Nicolas Jackson adding his name to the ever-growing scoresheet. The Bavarians look destined for the quarter-finals.

21:56 CET - Shellshocked, spent, Spurs... It's about as bad a first half as you are likely to see in the Champions League knockouts. Tottenham's Igor Tudor will have a lot to ponder at the break, and he must change things if they are to have any hope of keeping the tie alive when it heads to London for the second leg.

Atleti have pounced on the three Spurs mistakes that have led to goals, but they have also missed a few nice opportunities along the way.

21:46 CET - A much quieter first half at St James' Park, where Newcastle United and Barcelona head down the tunnel goalless.

Both sides have been limited in attack, mustering two shots on target each, with possession just as easily split in what is shaping up to be a tight tussle.

21:30 CET - Hope for Tottenham? Probably not, but they have a goal back against Atletico, as Pedro Porro does well to finish as challenges fly in.

21:26 CET - Even with the new goalkeeper, it's 4-0 to Atleti and Spurs are dead and buried. Robin Le Normand heads in from close range after a vicious free kick is just about kept out by Vicario. This could be double digits at this rate...

21:23 CET - Spare a thought for Antonin Kinsky - His last start for Tottenham was back in October, and he has been thrust into a Champions League tie where so much attention is on him, and on his UCL debut.

Whether it was nerves or a poor boot choice, only he will know, but to be taken off after 16 minutes is a brutal choice from Igor Tudor. Much will be made of it after the game, and the manager will be questioned on his decisions, which, with hindsight, seem incredibly poor.

Meanwhile, Bayern have added two quick-fire goals to lead Atalanta 3-0 with Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise netting for the visitors.

21:18 CET - Spurs are falling apart, again. Two goals in one minute from Atletico has almost finished the tie with Micky van de Ven slipping to allow Antoine Griezmann to score before, not to be outdone, Antonin Kinsky makes his second howler of the first half, mishitting the ball straight into the path of Julian Alvarez for the Argentine to walk the ball into the net.

Spurs are imploding, and Igor Tudor has seen enough. Kinsky has been subbed off in the 16th minute, with Vicario replacing him. Unbelievable, an unbelievable start at the Metropolitano.

21:15 CET - We are 15 minutes into Atalanta's first leg against Bayern in Bergamo, and it is the Bavarians who have opened the scoring with Josip Stanisic putting his side ahead in the 12th minute after good work from Serge Gnabry - it's the Croatian's first goal in the competition this season.

21:09 CET - Change of goalkeeper, same outcome for Spurs... Antonin Kinsky slips and gives the ball away inside his own box, and Atletico Madrid manoeuvre the ball to Marcos Llorente, who makes no mistake with a crisp finish.

He has scored his fourth goal in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League, netting for the first time since November 4th against Union Saint-Gilloise.

21:00 CET - Underway across Europe, in our three later games. What is in store for us?

20:45 CET - One final piece of team news before kick-off in 15 minutes, where the juggernaut of Bayern Munich head to Atalanta for their last 16 clash.

Despite a season of records, Harry Kane is on the bench for Bayern tonight, with Nicolas Jackson preferred for the starting berth.

Kamaldeen Sulemana gets a rare start for the hosts as he plays in a front three alongside Krstovic and Gianluca Scamacca.

20:40 CET - Advantage Galatasaray! They have beaten Liverpool 1-0 in Istanbul thanks to a seventh-minute goal from Mario Lemina.

In truth, both teams should have scored more, with the hosts shading the xG at 1.46, but Liverpool had more shots on target.

A truly chaotic clash - expect more of the same next week...

20:20 CET - More controversy at Rams Park, as Liverpool get the ball in the net from a corner, but VAR intervenes to rule it out for a handball on Ibrahima Konate - the trouble is following him around at the moment.

Meanwhile, Tottenham can park their dreadful Premier League form tonight as they travel to the Spanish capital to take on Atletico Madrid.

The big news is the omission of Vicario from the starting lineup. Igor Tudor has plumped for Antonin Kinsky to give him more security in goal, whilst former Atleti player Conor Gallagher is only on the bench.

Diego Simeone has decided to go with Antoine Griezmann to partner Julian Alvarez up top instead of Alexander Sorloth.

20:15 CET - As the chaos continues in Istanbul, let's bring you some team news from the 21:00 CET games.

Newcastle host Barcelona at St James' Park, looking to rally after a poor performance in the FA Cup at the weekend, as they were soundly beaten by Manchester City.

Eddie Howe surprisingly continues with William Osula up front, whilst there is no place in the starting line-up for Nick Woltemade.

For Hansi Flick, Robert Lewandowski is back in the XI, whilst he will be ably supported by Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

20:06 CET - Ibrahima Konate has got out of jail thanks to the assistant referee. The French defender misjudges a backpass, and as the shot comes in past Giorgi Mamardashvili, Konate fluffs the clearance to allow Victor Osimhen tap in.

But, in the build-up, Baris Yilmaz is judged to be active, and it won't count. A huge let-off for Liverpool and Konate.

19:36 CET - The half-time whistle has blown, and Liverpool will be mighty relieved to hear it, with the hosts creating numerous openings; they could quite easily be further ahead.

The Turkish side have had nine efforts to Liverpool's three and have racked up an xG of 1.14.

Perhaps the standout performer thus far has been Gala number 10 Gabriel Sara. The Brazilian has already created four chances, more than any other player.

19:02 CET - It's been a thrilling opening quarter-hour at Rams Park, with Mario Lemina heading Galatasaray into an early lead against Liverpool.

Victor Osimhen and Florian Wirtz have also seen decent openings go to waste.

17:53 CET - The starting lineups are in from Istanbul, and the major piece of team news is that Florian Wirtz returns to the Liverpool side, with Cody Gakpo dropping to the bench.

As expected, Giorgi Mamardashvili starts in the absence of Alisson Becker, while Joe Gomez is preferred at right-back to Jeremie Frimpong.

For Galatasaray, Noa Lang starts ahead of Leroy Sane, with Ilkay Gundogan, Sacha Boey and Mauro Icardi also among the substitutes.
