The opening round of fixtures in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League certainly lived up to expectations, with several of the world's best players putting on a show for their respective sides.

As usual, these are the players who made our best XI based on our very own internal ratings system.

Goalkeeper

Geronimo Rulli (Marseille) 8.9

While Marseille fell to a disappointing late defeat at the Bernabeu, the Olympians were perhaps fortunate not to concede another couple of goals due to the inspired display of Rulli between the sticks.

The Argentine frustrated a star-studded Real Madrid side for long periods of the contest, making 13 saves and preventing an xG of 1.68.

Defence

Marquinhos (PSG) 8.8

PSG began their Champions League title defence with an emphatic 4-0 home victory over Atalanta, sending an ominous warning sign to the rest of Europe.

Marquinhos was a typically dominant figure for the Parisians, winning five key duels while also scoring the opener with a neat close-range finish after just three minutes.

Jostein Gundersen (Bodo/Glimt) 8.6

It was a memorable debut for Bodo/Glimt in Europe's premier competition, with the Norwegian side recovering from a two-goal deficit to snatch an unlikely 2-2 draw at Slavia Prague.

Gundersen was crucial to their comeback in Czechia, as the centre-back made nine clearances and won 80% of his aerial duels throughout the contest.

Nuno Mendes (PSG) 8.8

Joining teammate Marquinhos in our Team of the Round is influential left-back Mendes, who netted PSG's third goal against Atalanta with a superb run and finish in the box.

The flying Portuguese full-back provided a constant attacking outlet for Luis Enrique's side, completing five successful dribbles and accumulating a 91% pass success rate during his 75 minutes on the pitch.

Midfield

Carlos Forbs (Club Brugge) 9

Club Brugge made a dream start to their European campaign, with a rampant first-half display helping them to a statement 4-1 win over Monaco.

Not only did Forbs assist Raphael Onyedika for the Belgian side's second goal, but he also created a further two big chances while completing 94% of his passes in the final third.

Trincao (Sporting CP) 9

Sporting proved too strong for Kazakh minnows Kairat Almaty in their Champions League opener, with Trincao the standout performer for Rui Borge’s side.

The attacking midfielder broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time courtesy of a stunning first-time effort outside the box, before doubling his tally for the match midway through the second period to complete a fine night’s work.

Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge) 8.9

Just like Forbs, Vanaken was brilliant in Club Brugge's dismantling of Monaco, with the playmaker setting up Nicolo Tresoldi for the all-important breakthrough before rifling home his side's third in the 42nd minute.

The Belgian completed all three of his dribbles while also winning nine duels and making two key clearances.

Rodrygo (Real Madrid) 8.9

Having endured a frustrating start to the season, Rodrygo was back to his best for Real Madrid against Marseille, causing all sorts of problems for visiting right-back Benjamin Pavard.

The Brazilian might not have registered a goal or an assist, but he provided plenty of quality in the key areas, completing 88% of his passes in the final third.

Attack

Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) 9.2

After an impressive 44-goal debut campaign in Madrid, Mbappe has carried his form into the new season, with the Frenchman netting a match-winning brace against Marseille on Tuesday evening.

While both of his goals came from the penalty spot, it was another superb all-round display from the 26-year-old, who in just 64 matches has become the fastest Real Madrid player to reach 50 goals for the club since Cristiano Ronaldo in November 2010.

Dusan Vlahovic (Juventus) 9.2

Juventus left it late to salvage a dramatic 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund, and key to their fightback was the extraordinary impact of substitute Vlahovic.

Introduced in the 58th minute, the Serbian forward levelled the game at 2-2 with a clinical one-on-one finish before scoring and assisting deep into stoppage time to spark wild scenes in the Allianz Stadium.

Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) 8.9

Trossard has struggled for playing time with the Gunners this season, but the winger provided a timely reminder of his quality on Tuesday evening with a match-winning cameo off the bench against Athletic Club.

Having set up Gabriel Martinelli's opener with 18 minutes remaining, Trossard sealed the three points with a well-taken strike of his own late on - the Belgian's first goal since April.
