Memphis Depay is set for an even longer spell on the sidelines after the Dutch striker suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury due to a mistake by Corinthians' fitness team.

According to ge.globo, Memphis was in the final stages of his comeback programme when he was instructed to perform a strength exercise deemed inappropriate for his stage of recovery.

During the exercise, Memphis felt the anterior aspect of his right thigh again, aggravating the grade 2 hamstring injury he had originally sustained. The mistake is expected to delay the Dutchman's return to the pitch by at least two weeks.

This has caused strong friction between the striker and team's coaching staff. Last Saturday, Memphis took to social media to vent his frustration, claiming that his absence from the derby against Palmeiras was due to "a few mistakes".

Memphis' initial injury occurred on 22 March, in a Brasileirão match against Flamengo.

During the latest international break, the player underwent intensive treatment in Europe after being called up for the Netherlands' friendlies against Norway and Ecuador. Memphis underwent treatment under the supervision of the Dutch national team and private professionals, using different methods from those used at Corinthians.

The results were so positive that the striker arrived in Brazil on 4 April, just shy of 100%. The player's plans included playing a few minutes in last Sunday's derby against Palmeiras. With the setback in the process, the four-week deadline set by the medical department was invalidated. Memphis is certain to miss this week's Libertadores clash against Santa Fe.

After struggling with his fitness during Euro 2024, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said that he'll only take Memphis Depay to the upcoming FIFA World Cup on one condition: "He needs to be in top shape; if you want to shine and add value to the team, you have to be 100 per cent fit."
