Although a majority of the Norwegian top clubs want to scrap the use of VAR, the Norwegian Football Federation wants to continue with the system.

The Norwegian Football Association (NFF) has decided to continue with the video refereeing system VAR, even though a majority of the Norwegian top clubs prefer to ditch the use of VAR.

Football president Lise Klaveness announced this on Wednesday afternoon after a two day board meeting.

A unanimous board reached the decision.

"We cannot already stop a project in which so many people have invested resources and which has only been allowed to function for two seasons, and which has become an important part of European club and national team football," says Lise Klaveness.

Clubs in Norway’s top two divisions have voted to discontinue the use of video assistant referees (VAR) in their domestic leagues.

Last week the 32 teams in Norsk Toppfotball (NTF), the organisation that represents clubs in Norway’s Eliteserien and First Division, passed a motion that “requests that the Norway Football Federation (NFF) board recommend, and that the Federal Assembly adopts, the discontinuation of video-assisted refereeing (“VAR”) as soon as possible.”

VAR was introduced into Eliteserien in 2023 but has frequently been the subject of supporter protests in Norway.

In July the top-flight match between Rosenborg and Lillestrom was abandoned after supporters threw tennis balls, fishcakes and smokebombs onto the pitch in protest against VAR.
