Ajax manager Francesco Farioli (35) explained the benching of starting right-back Devyne Rensch (22) against Heerenveen as a protective measure.

The Italian boss left Rensch out of his starting lineup for the crucial away game at sc Heerenveen which could see Ajax close the gap to league leaders PSV to just one point.

The right-back is the subject of nagging transfer rumours and is reportedly lose to joining Italian giants AS Roma during the January transfer window.

Farioli dismisses the notion that Rensch got benched because of an impending transfer. "Devyne (Rensch) is training well and doing well.

"As you know, there are things going around. One of my duties is also to protect players and to protect an important asset for the club"

The Italian also expressed his wish to keep Rensch, who's appeared in 25 games for Ajax this season, at the club. "My opinion and my desire would be to have Devyne (Rensch) with us until the end of the year and hopefully also for the future.

"These days, there is a lot of noise and are a lot of rumours, so I think it's better for him to be with the team but not to start the game."

Farioli confirmed it was his decision to keep Rensch out of the starting eleven and not the player's.
