Ajax boast an 8-point lead in the Dutch Eredivisie over chasers PSV but lost last week's home leg in the Europa League round of 16. Eintracht Frankfurt beat Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam, and they now hold a serious advantage for the away leg.
The team's unfavourable position and Sunday's crucial match against AZ—who have already beaten Ajax twice this season—will not make boss Francesco Farioli compromise his team's chances of progressing in the Europa League.
"It's unnecessary if you look at our performances," said Farioli during the pre-match press conference.
Ajax have only lost one league game this season which immediately followed a European match. "With that, we are probably record holders in Europe."
Striker issues
One notable issue Farioli will have to address in Frankfurt is the striker position. The Italian boss had to take Brian Brobbey out of last Sunday's game against PEC after just fifteen minutes due to a knee injury. The striker travelled with the squad to Germany, but it's unknown whether he will start Thursday's game.
"He is not in top form because he got quite a few kicks in our last two tough games," Farioli continued. "Now he has to recover. I think the chances of him playing are significant."
With Wout Weghorst and makeshift striker Christian Rasmussen both out due to injury, Farioli's only options are winger Bertrand Traore and U21 strikers Don-Angelo Konadu and Julian Rijkhoff.
"I do not rule out the possibility of Brobbey starting. But we have to make a wise and good decision. I will consult with our medical staff tomorrow.
"Of course, it's also important how Brobbey feels. In the end, I will make a decision"
Ajax will miss captain Jordan Henderson against Eintracht Frankfurt due to suspension but will have goalkeeper Matheus available after the UEFA granted permission for the Brazilian to replace the injured Remko Pasveer.
Eintracht Frankfurt-Ajax will kick off Thursday evening at 18.45 CET.
