Palmeiras stalwart Gustavo Gomez wants the Club World Cup to be a party, as he hopes his side can fight during the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Paraguayan is certainly no stranger to the Palmeiras faithful, having played for the Brazilian side since 2018. He now heads to the USA wanting his team to put on a show that he believes has been a long time in the making.

The 32-year-old explained: “I think it's something that we've been waiting for for a long time. It's going to be the first format of this new World Cup, with all the important and different teams.

"I think it's special for us. I think it's about uniting cultures. That's also what football is about: to unite, to enjoy, and to make it a party like it has to be."

Palmeiras face FC Porto, Al Ahly and finally Inter Miami in Group A, with the biggest draw coming in their final match of the first round as they face arguably the greatest football player of all time - something Gomez is relishing.

He added: "I think that, as I said, people are going to enjoy it because we also know that in Inter Miami, he's (Lionel Messi) currently one of the best players in history. And I think that's going to be very special for all the fans in general. We know that Palmeiras and there are a lot of people from Brazil in the United States.

"It will also be an opportunity for them to have the players a little closer and to be able to enjoy a game in Palmeiras, which is surely a bit difficult for them, obviously because they live in the United States, and I think it's a very nice opportunity for them too. I hope they enjoy it."

With Brazilian fans never afraid to travel in support of their team, as well as a sizeable diaspora in the US, Gomez expects the atmosphere to match that of the domestic games in South America's most populous country and he hopes his side will be able to perform for those making the trip.

"I think the atmosphere will be very similar to what South America and Brazil are like. I understand that and now watching the matches from the outside, from the television as well, the atmosphere is very similar to South America, and we will surely enjoy it a lot.

"The goal of Palmeiras is always to fight, to try to win as many titles as possible, even though we know that all the strongest teams in the world will be there, but I think that we always work to improve and try to get as far as possible.”
