The new LaLiga season opened with one of the most memorable performances in recent history. Unfortunately for Girona, it wasn't a positive one, as goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga had a night to forget.

Gazzaniga is entering his fourth season as Girona's first-choice goalkeeper, but his performance on Matchday One might shake his position quite a bit.

The 33-year-old Argentinian played a big part in the first goal of the season. When trying to play the ball out, he passed directly to the feet of Rayo Vallecano's forward Jorge De Frutos, who couldn't have had an easier time scoring into an open net.

Gazzaniga conceded for the second time just two minutes later. In the 43rd minute, he capped off his miserable day by giving the ball away in the box and bringing down De Frutos. Not only did that mean a penalty for Rayo, which they used to score their third goal, but also a red card for the keeper.

Gazzaniga left the game with a huge mistake leading to a goal, a penalty conceded and a red card that sent his team down to ten men barely halfway through the game. Flashscore "awarded" him with the individual rating of 2.1 - one of the lowest given since the introduction of the feature.

Girona lost the game 3-1. The Catalonian club dropped from Champions League qualifiers in the 2023/24 season straight to narrowly avoiding relegation in 16th place in 2024/25. Their fans surely hope this downward trend won't continue, and the opening day horror show will be a one-off from both their team and their long-serving goalkeeper.
