Italy's Davis Cup defence - all weekend

The final major tournament of the 2024 tennis season is nearing its end, and as has been the case in most of them, Jannik Sinner is in it to win it.

The world number one led Italy to their second-ever Davis Cup title last year and they're on course to defend it thanks to his win over Sebastian Baez of Argentina and the victory secured by himself and Matteo Berrettini in the deciding doubles contest.

Next up for the reigning champions - who also have Lorenzo Musetti to call upon - is Alex De Minaur's Australia, who pulled off an upset with their win over a star-studded USA side. With Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson both Grand Slam-winning doubles players and Thanasi Kokkinakis dazzling in his win over Ben Shelton, the Aussies are sure to provide a stern test.

The winner of that tie will be the favourite in the final with either the Netherlands or a Zverev-less Germany side joining them in it, but anything can happen in the Davis Cup, a tournament that can make lower-ranked players raise their game hugely.

Manchester City vs Tottenham - 18:30 CET

The standout match in the Premier League this weekend sees Manchester City host Tottenham, with both sides desperate for a return to form after damaging defeats before the international break.

The Cityzens suffered a fourth successive loss under Pep Guardiola for the first time since the Spaniard’s appointment in 2016, while Tottenham were beaten on home soil by an inspired Ipswich Town.

Despite City’s dismal run of form, all four of those defeats came on the road, so a return to the Etihad where they remain unbeaten in the Premier League since November 2022 feels hugely significant as they look to make up ground on league leaders Liverpool.

Tottenham, however, can draw confidence from their enthralling 3-3 draw at City last season. What’s more, Ange Postecoglou’s side have avoided defeat in five of their last nine away head-to-heads, so it promises to be primetime viewing on Saturday evening!

Las Vegas Grand Prix - 07:00 CET

Is this the weekend when Max Verstappen seals his fourth world championship title? Well, you can read all about exactly how he can become just the sixth man in Formula 1 history to win four world titles here.

But Verstappen already has one hand on the championship and it is probably a matter of when the Dutchman will do it. So we are going to focus on something far more up for grabs - the race for the constructors' title.

As it stands, McLaren on 993 points have a 36-point lead over Ferrari and a 49-point lead over Red Bull with three races left. However this weekend at least, there can be reason for optimism for the teams chasing McLaren after the British team appeared to be struggling for grip in practice on Friday.

Predicting who is going to have the fastest car from one race to the next has been what has made this season so entertaining despite Verstappen ultimately running away with the title again; you can expect that trend to continue in the final three races and if it does then the race for the constructors title might well go down to the wire.

McLaren though have the chance to shut down all the talk and give themselves an unassailable lead with a front-row finish under the bright Las Vegas lights.

Napoli vs Roma - 18:00 CET

Serie A returns from the international break with a bunch of eye-catching fixtures but perhaps the one with the most narrative comes from Naples as title challengers Napoli face Roma, under a new, but old, coach.

Claudio Ranieri re-took charge of the side he was once in the academy of for a fourth time during the break - a welcome good news story and a distraction for the Romans, who have had very little to shout about.

They come into the fixture languishing down in 12th with 13 points from 12 games, picking up one win in their last five. Meanwhile, at the top of the table the Neopolitans, under Antonio Conte, have had their first blip of the campaign, losing and drawing their last two games.

Ranieri doesn’t have a great record in head-to-heads against Conte, winning just two of his 10 fixtures. But, a new manager bounce, given his legendary status at the club, is well within his grasp, so expect an emotional match where the hosts will be wary of an upset.
