West Ham United manager Graham Potter has spoken in his latest press conference ahead of Friday's clash with Chelsea as his side look to bounce back from their humbling defeat to Sunderland on the opening day.

The Hammers began their season with a 3-0 thrashing at the Stadium of Light as their odds for relegation were slashed over the past week. Potter first spoke on their disappointing start to the season against the Black Cats.

West Ham must improve with the current squad

"We have to get more out of the squad that we have. We also look to improve, we will do that together, as a club, we will do that collectively and try to find the best solution.

"It's great when you've had a bad result, everyone thinks the silver bullet will come from outside and save us all. History would suggest it doesn't work like that.

"It's about being a team and accepting the criticism when a bad result comes, but to get on with your work and accept responsibility."

No injury worries

Potter then thankfully gave some positive team news and revealed that there are no injury issues to worry about heading into the clash, which will be a huge relief for supporters.

"Everybody's fine. George Earthy trained with the group today. Luis Guilherme went over on his shoulder the week before the game, so he is still missing, but apart from that, everybody is ok.”

Sunderland loss was gutting

Potter then spoke more on improving after the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland and revealed how gutted his team was after the game.

"It's a disappointing result, there's no getting away from that. It's a bad result for us.

"I believe a lot in the players, believe a lot in the team, I believe a lot in the club and my job is to support them and to push and to improve.

"It's the Premier League, we can't turn up anywhere and think we are going to get three points. We know we need to do more, to improve our performance. The players were gutted after the game.

"It's up to us to react and perform."

Chelsea will be a tough test

Finally, the questions turned to Chelsea, and Potter revealed that his side must be balanced both in attack and defence to stand a chance against the Club World Cup and Conference League champions.

"It will take a huge effort against Chelsea, a good performance and a bit of luck. We're playing against a talented team, so we have to have a good balance between attack and defence, and give everything.

"Chelsea have a very talented manager and squad, off the back of a very successful summer period. We expect a big challenge."
