The Premier League returned over the weekend after the final international break of 2024, with several stars standing out in our Team of the Week as the busy festive period draws closer.

Arsenal picked up a dominant 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest while league leaders Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2.

The big shock of the weekend came on Saturday evening when Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Several players stood out from the weekend's fixtures so, as always, it's time to look at Flashscore's Premier League Team of the Week using our player ratings system.

GK - Guglielmo Vicario, 7.8 (Tottenham)

Guglielmo Vicario stood out during Spurs' battering of Manchester City, making five saves to earn himself a 7.8 player rating.

The shot-stopper was the highest-rated of any goalkeeper over the weekend and helped his side to a memorable victory - although it has since been revealed that he suffered a fractured ankle and is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

DEF - Pedro Porro, 8.2 (Tottenham)

Another superb performer in Spurs' win at the Etihad was former City academy player Pedro Porro, who got on the scoresheet with an excellent finish early in the second half.

The Spaniard also put in a good defensive shift with seven clearances and two blocks as the visitors managed to keep an unlikely clean sheet against the current Premier League champions.

Porro's showing earned him an 8.2 rating, the joint-highest of three defenders over the weekend.

DEF - Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 8.2 (West Ham)

West Ham pulled off a shock 2-0 win away at Newcastle on Monday evening, with summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka grabbing his first goal for the club.

The defender arrowed a low drive in off the post to double the Hammers' lead on the night and ensure they came away with a valuable three points.

Wan-Bissaka also contributed plenty in defence with four clearances, three tackles, two interceptions and one block.

DEF - Emerson, 8.2 (West Ham)

Emerson was another West Ham defender who put in an excellent showing against Newcastle, picking up an assist for the opening goal after providing a superb cross for Tomas Soucek to head home.

The Italian went on to make six tackles and keep the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon quiet - earning an 8.2 player rating in the process.

MID - James Maddison, 9.0 (Tottenham)

This week's top performer by some distance was James Maddison, who netted twice in Spurs' win over Manchester City.

Maddison first opened the scoring with an instinctive finish from close range before doubling his side's lead minutes later with a delightful chipped finish.

The midfielder's early brace set the tone for the remainder of the match and heavily contributed to his 9.0 player rating - the highest of anyone across the weekend.

MID - Joao Gomes, 8.4 (Wolves)

Wolves picked up their second league win of the season at the weekend, thrashing Fulham 4-1 away from home with several standout performances.

Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes put in an all-action display by grabbing a goal and an assist while also making five tackles.

The 23-year-old is quickly establishing as one of Wolves' most valuable assets alongside another Brazilian - but more on him in a little bit.

MID - Enzo Fernandez, 8.6 (Chelsea)

Chelsea recorded a narrow 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday afternoon with Enzo Fernandez putting in an excellent showing on his first Premier League start since the beginning of October.

The Argentine first set up Nicolas Jackson's opener before getting on the scoresheet himself with a header from close range.

Fernandez also put in a shift away from goal, making five tackles on top of three key passes in what turned out to be a superb all-round display.

MID - Bukayo Saka, 8.4 (Arsenal)

Bukayo Saka was one of the standout performers in Arsenal's 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest, with the Englishman recording a goal and an assist as part of a dominant attacking display.

The Gunners needed to get back to winning ways after struggling slightly before the international break and Saka ensured they did just that - with his goal a particular highlight, drifting inside before firing into the top corner.

The winger continued to be a threat throughout the match and made four key passes as Arsenal cruised to a routine victory.

FWD - Mohamed Salah, 8.4 (Liverpool)

Mohamed Salah excelled in Liverpool's 3-2 win over Southampton, scoring twice to seal an important win for the Reds.

The Egyptian first levelled with a clever finish before emphatically converting from the penalty spot to ensure Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

His comments after the match regarding his contract situation perhaps put a dampener on what was another top performance.

FWD - Joao Pedro, 8.8 (Brighton)

Brighton recorded a narrow 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday with Joao Pedro once again central to their success in front of goal.

The forward only needed 64 minutes to grab a goal and an assist before being substituted as he continued to make his way back to full fitness.

Pedro opened the scoring after converting a loose ball in the penalty area before playing a defence-splitting pass to set up Kaoru Mitoma to ensure the Seagulls took all three points.

FWD - Matheus Cunha, 8.5 (Wolves)

As mentioned earlier, Wolves have a Brazilian star on their hands in Matheus Cunha, who shone during their 4-1 win over Fulham.

The forward scored twice and recorded an assist during the victory - highlighting his worth as one of the best players outside of the 'big six'.

Both of Cunha's efforts could win any 'Goal of the Week' contest, but the second particularly stood out with the Brazilian curling an exceptional strike into the top corner.
