Dutch star Memphis Depay (30) has played down talks of retiring from football following his transfer to Brazilian club Corinthians in September as a free agent.

Depay previously played for Atletico Madrid last season but parted ways with the Spanish club after the season ended.

He was a constant feature in Ronald Koeman's Netherlands' side during EURO 2024, where he contributed one goal and one assist across six matches, helping his team reach the semi-finals.

While many interpreted his move to Brazil as a sign of impending retirement, Depay, in an exclusive interview with Flashscore, expressed that he still feels youthful and vibrant in his career.

“I’m 30. What are you talking about retiring? It’s a long way. I’m young. I’ve been in the game a long time but I have a long time left God willing,” he revealed.

Depay joined Corinthians on a two-year deal that will keep him at the club till December 2026. After playing in the Netherlands, England, France, and Spain, the Dutch forward opted for Brazil to embrace a new challenge in his career.

“For my decision (to join Corinthians), I felt like I needed to do something different. I like a challenge. I didn’t know anything about the league.

"I just knew that Brazil is like the Mecca of football. All the talents are coming from there so I wanted to see that and they convinced me.”

When Memphis Depay joined Corinthians, the Sao Paulo club was in 17th place in the Campeonato Brasileiro, fighting to avoid relegation.

His impressive performance, with seven goals and one assist in 11 matches, significantly boosted Corinthians to seventh place, securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores qualifiers.

“Corinthians is a huge team in Brazil, the biggest. So far it’s going really well and I’m happy. I feel like I’m home.

"The people in Brazil are like Ghana, very enthusiastic, energized people. The country is beautiful and they have good food. The training facility is amazing.”

Earlier in the year when Depay’s compatriot Steven Bergwijn left Ajax to sign for Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad, a move Dutch national team coach Koeman didn’t approve of: “I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi but with Memphis, it can be different.

"The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and if he reaches his level,” Koeman stated.

Depay currently has 46 goals for the Netherlands and is just four goals shy of matching the record for the country's all-time top scorer.

The Corinthians forward will hope he can build on his good start to life in Brazil and potentially return to the national team for the first time since EURO 2024.
