Taty Castellanos inspired Lazio to a first Serie A (SA) win of the season as his goal and two assists helped seal a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Hellas Verona, whose winless run against the Biancocelesti was extended to eight games (D3, L5).

Maurizio Sarri’s side came into this clash following an opening-day defeat at Como, looking to avoid a run of three consecutive SA losses without scoring for the first time since March 2013.

Any danger of that sequence continuing was extinguished in the third minute, when Mattéo Guendouzi clinically fired past Lorenzo Montipò after being expertly teed up by Castellanos.

The Argentine added another assist to his name seven minutes later, audaciously teeing up skipper and former Verona forward Mattia Zaccagni to add an expertly taken finish of his own.

Verona head coach Paolo Zanetti cut a frustrated figure on the touchline, but his side went within inches of halving the deficit when Antoine Bernede brought the ball down and saw his shot cannon off the post.

Any hopes of a comeback were dealt a hammer blow, though, when Castellanos added Lazio’s third to cap off a fine first-half display, effortlessly powering home a header from Nicolo Rovella’s free-kick.

Lazio cut through the Gialloblu defence with alarming ease again after the break and spurned a golden opportunity to add a fourth when Matteo Cancellieri beat the offside trap to latch onto Rovella’s pass, yet blazed his attempt over the bar. It was effectively one-way traffic, as Castellanos went close again with a long-range effort that flew just wide, before Guendouzi had a goal chalked off for offside.

Bernède was one of Verona’s liveliest players and almost netted a consolation following a quick flurry of activity in the Lazio box with a close-range strike, but Zanetti’s side continued to look porous at the back.

There was still time for a fourth thanks to Boulaye Dia, who applied the simplest of tap-ins to Reda Belahyane’s ball across the box.

This was as routine a victory as Sarri could have wished for, as the Roman outfit claimed a fourth consecutive H2H win against a Mastiffs side that endured a sobering night in the Italian capital.

Their four-match unbeaten (W1, D3) run dating back to the previous campaign came to an end, leaving Zanetti with plenty to ponder if his side are to improve on last season’s 14th-place finish.
