FC Midtjylland remain unbeaten following a 1-1 draw on Silkeborg IF's artificial turf on Sunday afternoon in a match that was packed with chances and incidents requiring referee Jacob Karlsen to make split-second decisions.
When the dust settled, William Kirk and Stanley Iheanacho had put their names on the scoresheet, while FC Midtjylland talent Julius Emefile was left to rue a straight red card just ten minutes after coming onto the pitch.
Silkeborg now have five points from six games, sitting mid-table, while Midtjylland have 11 points from five games ahead of their visit to Danish champions AGF on Wednesday evening for a rescheduled match.
Silkeborg made an excellent start to the local derby on Sunday, and after 13 minutes, 19-year-old midfielder William Kirk swung his left foot to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. The lightning-fast Lucas Riisgaard, playing on the right flank, was also especially a constant thorn in the visitors' side.
Star players Dario Osorio and Franculino—who may have been playing their farewell match—both struck the woodwork, yet the top-ranked side trailed at the break.
Mike Tullberg responded by making three substitutions at the start of the second half. It helped a little, but after just under an hour, one of the new signings was sent off. Julius Emefile underestimated Riisgaard’s pace and received a straight red card for bringing the attacking player down with a tackle.
The visitors still managed to restore parity after 66 minutes. Friday Etim played the ball across the box, and Iheanacho easily equalized to make it 1–1.
With the numerical advantage, Silkeborg took the initiative in the closing stages, and the ball found the net twice. However, referee Karlsen and his team ruled out the goals—calling offside on one occasion and a foul on the other—after 16-year-old debutant Kristian Bogild had already celebrated.
