'You'll see': Netherlands boss Koeman mysterious about solved midfield puzzle

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said during Monday's post-game press conference that he has his ideal midfield in mind, but refused to share it just yet.

The Netherlands secured their ticket to next year's FIFA World Cup with a 4-0 win over Lithuania in the Johan Cruyff ArenA. Koeman started a new midfield trio in Amsterdam, with Tijjani Reijnders accompanying Frenkie de Jong in a midfield pivot, with Xavi Simons starting as the '10'.

Koeman has puzzled around with his midfield, where the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Justin Kluivert have also started lately.

"You shouldn't think that there are only three midfielders and that the midfield should always be the same. If Justin plays as our '10', or Xavi like tonight, that's different from when Tijjani (Reijnders) plays there," Koeman told reporters at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

"It can change every game. Of course, we have excellent midfielders. Reijnders could be an important player for us, despite being sloppy at times."

After trying out many versions of the midfield, Koeman revealed he has found his perfect formula. "We have options, but I'm convinced about what should usually be our midfield, but there are games during which we can do things differently, too."

When asked if he could reveal it, however, Koeman kept reporters in the dark: "You'll see"

'Not many teams are better than us'

Oranje struggled at times in Group G, finishing three points above Poland. The Poles held the Netherlands to two draws, while Lithuania formed a tough opponent during September's visit to the Baltic state.

Despite everything, Koeman is more than convinced about his team, while still having a lot to learn before next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"I've said since the start that we are the best team in the group, and we proved that," Koeman continued.

"But some things will have to improve during moments in the game, whether that's concentration or something else. I don't believe it's something tactical, but we should realise what's needed to be stable. That also means holding each other accountable in a positive way; that's what makes you a better team."

Koeman even stated that not many teams are as good as the Netherlands at the moment.

"We're not done yet; it's not like we're gonna play a fantastic World Cup already. The bad moments have to go. They could cost us a game. But I don't see many teams that are always better than us, because we've proved that too. It's in there, but we have to be more stable in those moments.

"If you look at the entire qualifying, you see countries with more creativity than us and have one up over us. But we also proved in our two games against Spain that they can only beat us after penalties. During a game at the tournament, that could happen too. We possess that quality."
