Lamontville Golden Arrows have already won at Mamelodi Sundowns this season in the MTN8 semi-finals, but must do something no-one has managed in over 16 years if they are to repeat that feat in Tuesday’s Carling Knockout quarter-final tie.

Sundowns have not lost at home in the competition since Kaizer Chiefs defeated them 1-0 in the quarter-finals of what was then the Telkom Knockout in 2010.

They have played 13 home ties since then, winning 11 and drawing two, scoring 27 goals and conceding four times.

They have not let in a goal in any of their last seven home ties in the competition dating back to 2015.

They have been ousted twice in that time at home though after being held to 0-0 draws and losing on penalties.

The first was against the now defunct SuperSport United in 2016 and then against Marumo Gallants last year. They got their revenge this season with victory over Gallants in the first round.

Golden Arrows won 1-0 in the first leg of their MTN8 semi, but lost 3-2 at home and went out on the away goals rule as Sundowns claimed the trophy.

Their issue is scoring goals, though they did beat Chippa United 4-0 in the last round of the Carling Knockout so maybe this is their competition.

They will not have happy memories of their last visit to Sundowns in pursuit of this trophy though as they lost 5-0 in a first round clash in 2024.

Away wins have been rare for Abafana Bes’thende in the Carling Knockout. They have one win and six defeats in their last seven road trips dating back to 2013.

That single victory was at SuperSport in 2019 when they won 1-0, but they conceded 19 goals in their six defeats, more than three per game.
