Football is well and truly back, with action taking place in all of the major leagues over the weekend, and with the return of the beautiful game comes the return of Flashscore's Team of the Week series, which features some stunning performances in the first edition of the 25/26 season.

Based on our very own data-based internal ratings system, this is who made our best XI for the weekend just gone:

Goalkeeper

Walter (Mirassol), 8.8

Unlike the European leagues, the stakes are high in Brazil's top division with it at its halfway point, and veteran goalkeeper Walter produced a top performance to earn them a big win at the weekend.

He made six saves against Fortaleza, keeping out efforts amounting to 2.55 xGOT to give his side a crucial 1-0 win in their battle for Copa Libertadores qualification.

Defence

Jurrien Timber (Arsenal), 10

Having played just 20 minutes in Arsenal’s season-opener at Manchester United, Timber enjoyed a dream return to the starting lineup against Leeds on Saturday evening.

Not only did the Dutchman find the net twice with a pair of clinical finishes in the box, but he also assisted Bukayo Saka for the Gunners’ second, as well as winning nine duels throughout his 64 minutes on the pitch. A performance worthy of a perfect 10 rating.

Thomas Kristensen (Udinese), 8.6

Udinese started their season with a 1-1 draw against Verona, and their first goal of the campaign came from an unlikely source, with defender Kristensen getting the third of his career.

He gave his side the lead with a powerful header and was excellent in the air at the other end too, winning seven out of eight aerial duels.

Souffian El Karouani (Utrecht), 9.2

Utrecht made it two home wins from two to start their Eredivisie season, with El Karouani inspiring them to a convincing 4-1 victory over Excelsior.

The Moroccan left-back assisted his side’s first three goals of the contest, while also winning 80% of ground duels and making a couple of key clearances.

Midfield

Steven Berghuis (Ajax), 9.5

Berghuis endured an injury-hit campaign last season, but this one will be one to remember for the Dutchman if the first few matches are anything to go by.

He opened the scoring for Ajax in their 1-0 win over Heracles and also made four key passes, producing his second top performance in three games.

Nico Paz (Como), 9.1

Paz is being heavily linked with a move to Tottenham at the moment, but that seems to be motivating him rather than distracting him judging by how he started the Serie A season.

He opened his account for the campaign with a beauty of a free-kick in Como's 2-0 win over Lazio, and the assist that came before that may have been even better, with him dancing past an opponent before playing a perfect through ball from inside his own half.

Alexandru Maxim (Gaziantep), 9.1

This could be the start of the last season of 35-year-old Alexandru Maxim's career, but the Romanian is showing no signs of slowing down.

He scored a 95th-minute winner from the spot for Gaziantep against Genclerbirligi, and had earlier set up their first goal with one of the best passes you'll see this season.

Pedro Goncalves (Sporting CP), 10

Our second perfect 10 of the week comes from Goncalves, who got three goals and one assist in Sporting CP's 4-1 win away to Nacional.

It was a hat-trick of high quality too, with two of his goals being excellent efforts from just outside the box.

Attack

Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), 9.5

Buchanan enjoyed a Sunday evening to remember for Villarreal, netting three times against Girona to become the first-ever Canadian to score a hat-trick in LaLiga.

It was the 26-year-old’s first goal that will live long in the memory, as he surged beyond his marker on the right wing before rifling a thunderous effort into the roof of the net.

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), 9.5

Having scored in Bayern’s Super Cup triumph over Stuttgart last weekend, Kane carried his form into the Bundesliga’s opening night, bagging a second-half hat-trick as the Bavarians thrashed RB Leipzig 6-0.

The Englishman found the net with three typically unerring finishes, including a sublime sweeping strike for Bayern’s fifth after combining well with new signing Luis Diaz.

Jean-Matteo Bahoya (Frankfurt), 9.7

In the absence of Hugo Ekitike, it was Bahoya who rose to the occasion for Frankfurt in their impressive 4-1 home triumph against Werder Bremen.

The French attacker headed home from Can Uzun’s delivery in the first half before lifting a sumptuous finish over Mio Backhaus early in the second period to secure all three points for the Eagles.
