Clara Tauson was looking for revenge against Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday night, but had to see herself beaten again by the 18-year-old Russian for the fourth time this year.
The Dane played a terrific first set and had Andreeva completely on the ropes, but the defensively strong Russian dragged herself back in the match despite outbursts of anger. And in the end, Tauson completely fell apart.
Third-seeded Mirra Andreeva won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 as Clara Tauson crashed out of the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany.
The Dane will now try to restore morale before Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
In the very first game, there was nothing to indicate that Clara Tauson would win the first set. Mirra Andreeva showed her usual high level and earned a break point, but Tauson survived thanks to two big serves.
Instead Clara Tauson claimed the first break of the match to make it 4-2 and with her first serve working well, she never allowed Andreeva to get back into the set winning 6-3.
Andreeva then went to the locker room to find herself and gradually recovered her stylish game in the second set despite moments of frustration where she whipped her thighs with the racket.
But Andreeva still managed to gain a break point at 3-2, and even though Tauson had golden opportunities to save it, a couple of sloppy points allowed Andreeva to take a 4-2 lead, and the Russian never allowed Tauson chances of breaking back.
The third set was similar to the second. Tauson showed a very high level in flashes, but Andreeva's defense worked excellently, even though she was still incredibly furious with herself.
And when the Russian served the ball to her backhand, Tauson had difficulty setting up anything. Andreeva broke to 2-1, and then Tauson began to crack and fell apart at the end of the set.
