Alexander Zverev got a short route to the French Open quarter-finals after opponent Tallon Griekspoor was forced to withdraw in the second set: 6-4, 3-0.

The 28-year-old Griekspoor reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time after eliminating Ethan Quinn in five sets. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev was due to play in his eighth consecutive fourth round at the French Open after a straight-sets win over Flavio Cobolli.

Griekspoor and Zverev played entertaining matches at Indian Wells and the ATP 500 tournament in Munich. Griekspoor beat his German foe in California after two tiebreaks, and Zverev won the second meeting in Germany after as many tiebreaks.

A bright start from the Dutchman saw the Haarlem-born player go up 3-0 in just a few minutes, but a drastic drop in form saw Zverev dominate the remainder of the first set and win 6-4 after massively improving his service.

Griekspoor continued to struggle mightily in the second set and was looking at a 3-0 deficit after a mere 14 minutes. The Dutchman was seen playing with a lot of tape on his abdomen, pointing at an injury which kept him from playing up to his full potential and had him serve at low speeds.

After 54 minutes and Zverev's ninth game win in the previous ten games, Griekspoor made the call to withdraw from the match and the French Open.

With his automatic win, Zverev could now meet Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals in Paris. The Serbian icon could book his 100th French Open win against British Cameron Norrie this afternoon.
