Antonio Sanabria saw his second-half strike cancelled in the dying minutes, as Gianluca Caprari rose to the occasion with a clinical finish to extend Monza’s unbeaten run to five games and in turn deny Il Toro a first league win in five matches at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Exploiting an early injury to Monza’s Pablo Mari, Torino began confidently and saw Nikola Vlasic and Aleksey Miranchuk force Michele Di Gregorio into the spotlight.

The Inter academy product proved equal though, stepping up to the task of denying the hosts a maiden goal inside the opening 15 minutes of a home match this campaign.

Yet, the prospect of a top-half finish in their debut Serie A season eventually inspired Monza, and they began to craft some decent chances themselves.

It was Patrick Ciurria who led the Biancorossi’s renewed charge with successive strikes from outside the box, only to see Vanja Milinkovic-Savic come out on top every time with impressive saves.

Those efforts did little to affect Torino though, and they once again looked the hungrier of the two sides as the break beckoned.

Sanabria was denied an assist before the break due to a handball, but within 30 seconds of the restart, the Granata centre-forward turned goalscorer with a remarkable low drive into the bottom corner to get the Stadio Olimpico singing again.

Taken aback, Monza took a good quarter-hour to gather themselves, and came close after the hour mark via Carlos Augusto’s shot which was superbly parried away by Milinkovic-Savic.

That attempt signalled a shift in momentum, as the visitors eventually took strides and struck the equaliser in the 86th minute from Caprari’s remarkable strike which lodged into the top corner, denying a fifth win in six home meetings for Ivan Juric’s men.

Despite the defeat, Torino now remain unbeaten in all matches played against newly promoted Serie A sides for the first time since 2016/17, and will look to maintain their momentum when they visit Verona next.

High-flying Monza, on the other hand, were given a reality check by a side against whom they remain winless since a 2-0 Serie B win in 1990.
