Why Barcelona and Arsenal might be willing to offer Bernardo Silva a new home

This summer is set to be Manchester City's most important for some time.

Rumours that the Premier League might finally hand down their punishment to the club for potential rule breaches are gathering pace, as is the notion that Pep Guardiola might finally decide to pass the managerial baton on to someone else.

Bernardo Silva will leave Man City this summer

Perhaps the most significant moment of all will be current captain, Bernardo Silva's departure, however.

The 31-year-old midfielder has already announced that this season will be his last at the club he has served with aplomb since signing from Monaco back in 2017.

It's difficult to put into words just how important the Portuguese has been for Guardiola and for the team during his nine years at Manchester City.

For a start, his availability has been unmatched. Only in 2020/21 has he played fewer than 33 games of a 38-game Premier League season (32 and counting in 2025/26).

Most games played and most passes made

Currently, his total games played stand at an unmatched 444, of which he's started in 351, again a figure that can't be beaten.

His cumulative minutes add up to 31, 715, which is almost 8,000 more minutes played than the nearest teammate (Kevin De Bruyne - 23,853).

With 74 goals scored and 74 assists provided across all competitions, this is an exceptional return that speaks to the player's ability at the highest levels of the game.

Not to mention an 89.4% pass accuracy after completing 18,328 of his 20,501 total passes, and the winning back of possession 1,577 times (only Rodri has done so on more occasions - 2,068 - in the same time frame).

The 566 total tackles that Silva has made since joining the club are also the most in the squad, with only Rodri's 531 coming close, though the Spaniard has a better success rate in this regard (60.3% to 54.8%), as might be expected given their differing roles.

No one has attempted more one-on-one duels

One area that's not talked about enough is just how dogged the Portuguese can be with and without the ball.

As well as having the silky skills that mark him out as a special player, he also enjoys mixing it with opponents, and that can be seen in his 113 progressive carries and 17 successful take-ons.

With 19 titles to his name since joining City (and the possibility of two more to come), in short, Silva has got everything in his locker, and whilst he'll be 32 years of age by the start of the 2026/27 campaign, he's still got a few years left in him at the top level yet.

The question is where he might end up.

No chance of a move to Saudi Arabia

There's little chance of him moving to Saudi Arabia despite the evident riches on offer, and the two clubs that have been mentioned most as possible destinations at this point are Barcelona and Arsenal, with both offering something quite different for the player.

Silva is clearly cut out for the physicality and fast pace of the Premier League, and alongside the likes of Declan Rice, would certainly add some depth to what's been a fading Arsenal midfield over the course of this season.

It's hard to believe that he would swap the North West for the capital, however, given the rivalry between the Gunners and City over these past few years.

Barcelona offers sunnier climbs, and from a playing perspective, the club are back on the up again and would benefit from someone with Silva's experience and know-how.

Not many better free transfers, if any

The issue facing the Catalans is that they're very well stocked in midfield, and unless they were planning to sell one or more of their current crop, a move for Silva makes little sense at this stage.

If he's willing to accept that he'd be rotated regularly by Hansi Flick, then it's a switch that could have legs, but that would be a big ask of a player who still deserves to be in the starting line-up.

Of course, it may well be that Flick and the sporting director, Deco, believe that what Silva can provide is precisely what Barca have been missing, and in that event, a current member of the squad would drop out.

Lest we forget that whoever the player signs for, he would be arriving as a free transfer, so can either the Gunners or the Catalans really risk looking this gift horse in the mouth?
