Following a 4-1-0 start to the 2026/27 season, the New York Rangers battled the Washington Capitals on Friday in hopes that they could solidify themselves as early favorites in the Metropolitan Division.
Unfortunately, not only did the Rangers fall short against their key division rivals, but they also saw superstar goaltender Igor Shesterkin leave the ice, with the organization's potential Stanley Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
Through his first five outings, Shesterkin looked back to his best, posting a 1.79 GAA alongside a .927 save percentage, with the Rangers hoping he could help them back to the post-season after a disappointing finish a year ago. Not only that, but the team are dealing with an injury to Joonas Korpisalo as well, meaning that if Shesterkin were to miss some time, that would heap more and more pressure on 24-year-old Dylan Garand.
Unfortunately, on Saturday, the absolute worst news was confirmed for the Rangers, as it was revealed that due to the lower-body injury, he would miss the remainder of the 2026/27, dealing a brutal blow to a team that's now sitting at 4-2-0 on the season.
This leaves the Rangers with one of the most inexperienced goaltending groups in the National Hockey League, and unsurprisingly, there's already analysts looking at potential replacements for Shesterkin, who will hopefully be healthy for the 2027/28 campaign.
With a great group of skaters, New York look refreshed early in the 2026/27 campaign, and now, they'll hope their leaders can help them through what must be a brutal blow, but with Shesterkin out, regardless of who they can acquire to replace him, this teams hopes have taken a major fall.
